12/4/14 - Benedict Cumberbatch has finalized his deal to play Doctor Strange.  Scott Derrickson is directing and Jon Spaihts is writing the script.  Kevin Feige is producing.   Source: Deadline.com

 

10/27/14 - Benedict Cumberbatch is in negotiations to take on Marvel's Doctor Strange, slated for release on July 8, 2016.  Benedict had been an early contender for the role and was again in the running after Phoenix dropped out. Scott Derrickson is directing the Marvel feature, which centers on a former neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. 10/2/14 - Joaquin Phoenix has ended negotiations for the lead role in Marvel's Doctor Strange.  Phoenix was in talks for the role in mid-July, but a deal never came to fruition.   Scott Derrickson is directing the Marvel feature, and sources say the director and studio are already on the hunt for a new leading man.  The film centers on the former neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Doctor Strange made his first appearance in the Marvel Universe more than 50 years ago, and was first created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in the pages of Strange Tales No. 110.  Source: The Hollywood Reporter

 

6/3/14 - Marvel Studios has signed Scott Derrickson as director of the Marvel superhero Doctor Strange.  Marvel also is looking to hire a writer.  Source: The Hollywood Reporter

 

1/28/13 - President of production at Marvel Studios Kevin Feige wants fans to know that his eyes are already set beyond Marvel's Phase II of movie releases.  Phase III will include Ant-Man and Doctor Strange.  On the subject of Ant-Man, Feige emphasized that it's all about director Edgar Wright.  Ant-Man is definitely part of Phase Three.  As for Doctor Strange, Feige is excited for him.  He said he's a great, original character. He's totally different from anything else we have, just like Guardians of the Galaxy. He's totally different from anything we've done before, as is Ant-Man, which keeps us excited.  Source: Blastr.com

 

6/22/10 - Deadline reported Marvel Studios has hired scribes Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer to write Dr. Strange, marking forward progress on a long-gestating superhero property which will likely be among the first Marvel films generated under the Disney banner.
