Pacific Rim 2

10/17/14 - Guillermo del Toro is planning two more Pacific Rim films.  “The direction we’re going is very different from the first movie,” the director said. “All I can say is that some of your favorite characters come back, some others don’t, because we have decided that we’re going to shoot ambitiously and say, ‘let’s hope we have three movies.’ So some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one. I hope people like it, but you’re going to get a very different experience from the first one.”  A third Pacific Rim movie is just the latest expansion of the nascent franchise. Earlier this year, del Toro announced plans for an animated series based on the movie, in addition to continuing the comic book adventures of the Jaeger pilots as previously seen in the Pacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero graphic novel written by the movie’s Travis Beachum.  Source: The Hollywood Reporter

6/26/14 - Universal has slated sequel Pacific Rim 2 for release on Friday, April 7, 2017.  Guillermo del Toro returns to direct the giant-robot film.  Zak Penn and del Toro will write the script for the sequel, which will be released in 3D and Imax.  Legendary's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will return to produce with del Toro, Mary Parent and Callum Greene. Jillian Share will executive produce.  Del Toro's 2013 film Pacific Rim starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day. It was set in a futuristic world where giant monsters called Kaiju have risen from the ocean floor to overrun the Earth. To fight the threat, humans built giant robots that are controlled by two pilots.  Universal will distribute the sequel.  Source: The Hollywood Reporter

12/4/12 - Pacific Rim 2 is already on the drafting table. Director Guillermo del Toro started work on a follow up script to the Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures movie with Travis Beacham. Beacham, who wrote the screenplay to Pacific Rim, has already been at work on a graphic novel prequel to the film expected out next year.  Source: Deadline.com
